What is Online Gambling?
Online Gambling is the process of betting or playing games of chance for money using a remote device such as a computer, tablet or mobile phone. It includes online casinos, poker rooms and sports betting platforms but does not include Video Lottery Terminals (VLT).
The growth of the iGaming industry has been fuelled by cultural approval, legalization, easy access, celebrity endorsements and marketing initiatives. Nevertheless, online gambling has also been linked to negative consequences such as financial loss, social and family disruption, impaired work or school performance, and health problems including insomnia, high blood pressure and anxiety. In addition, some individuals have engaged in illegal activities to fund their gambling habits, which can lead to criminal charges and fines.
Early risk indicators are not well understood, and the emergence of problem gambling in online gaming is complex. This is partly due to the lack of single, unmistakable, warning signs, and it may be that risk indicators develop over time. This is why it is important to identify, detect and act on early risk indicators.
Young people can be introduced to gambling behaviours through features of some online games such as loot boxes and skin betting. Adults can play a role in educating children and young people about the risks of online gambling, and ensuring they have access to helpful support services if needed.
