How to Play Poker

Poker is a card game where players bet on their hand. The betting continues until someone has all the chips or everyone folds. A good player will mix up his style, betting and bluffing to keep his opponents guessing what he has in his hand.

Each player has two cards in their hand and five community cards on the table. The best possible hand is 5 of a kind, which consists of three matching cards of one rank and two matching cards of another rank, or a straight consisting of five consecutive cards of the same suit, or a flush consisting of five cards that skip around in rank or sequence but are all from the same suit.

A strong player will fast play his hands, making large bets to build the pot and push off other players waiting for a draw that beats his hand. He will also know how to spot weak spots in the game of his opponent, i.e. the areas where they are most likely to make mistakes, and take advantage of those mistakes.

A weaker player will often try to put an opponent on a particular hand, which can backfire, as the other player will work out his range and calculate how likely it is that he has that hand. More experienced players will, however, work out the ranges of all possible hands that their opponents could have and use that to improve their decision-making.
