What is a Casino?

Casino

A casino is a facility for certain types of gambling. It is often built with or combined with hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail shops, cruise ships and other tourist attractions. Some casinos feature live entertainment as well.

Casinos are operated by governments or private corporations and are usually located in the territory of a country that allows gambling. In the United States, casino gambling is regulated at the state level. As such, each state may have different laws governing the types of games that can be played in a casino and the percentage of revenue that the casino must retain.

The modern casino is much like an indoor amusement park for adults, with the majority of its entertainment coming from gambling. Slot machines, black jack, roulette, craps and keno are the games that make up most of the billions in profit that casinos rake in every year.

A casino is a place that strives to keep its patrons happy and distracted, with the decor usually designed to evoke opulence and wealth. They also work to minimize the awareness of time, with carefully controlled lighting and even a scent that is designed to create a sense of anticipation and excitement. Something about the atmosphere of a casino seems to encourage cheating and theft, however, so casinos spend a large amount of money on security. Many have catwalks that allow surveillance personnel to look down directly on the tables through one-way glass.
